Moleskin is a tightly woven cotton canvas. It takes its name from "mole skin", which refers to the material's soft, lustrous appearance. Unlike English moleskin, which is scratched and has a fluffy feel, French moleskin is smooth.
Long used for book covers and clothing linings, moleskin has been used since the 19th century to make work clothes, thanks to its density, which makes it highly resistant and even water-repellent. Quite expensive to buy, pants and jackets made from this thick, robust material could be worn over and over again, sometimes for a lifetime.
In the early 20th century, Adolphe Lafont came up with the idea of creating garments with a different color depending on the wearer's profession: ecru for stonemasons and sculptors, black for carpenters and roofers, brown for joiners and cabinetmakers, blue for mechanics and drivers.
Moleskin work clothes were worn by workers well into the 1970s and 80s.
We've chosen Moleskine quality in a heavyweight 400gr/M2, woven in France.
Over time, the fabric softens and the vegetable dyes develop a beautiful patina.

The dyes in this article were created using plant-based pigments.
Vegetable dyeing is at the heart of our philosophy and our commitment to creating greener products.
The main benefits are:
- Reduced ecological footprint: vegetable dyeing uses dyes extracted from plants, flowers, roots or bark, limiting the use of toxic chemicals found in synthetic dyes.
-Biodegradability: vegetable dye residues can be composted or easily treated, reducing water and soil pollution.
-Lower energy consumption: vegetable dyes are produced at lower temperatures than chemical dyes, so they require less energy.
To produce our colors, we use a variety of pigments: Pastel des Teinturiers, Indigo,
Vegetable Charcoal, Dyer's Madder, Chamomile, Walnut...
Vegetable dyeing is also a quest for "imperfect beauty" (Wabi-Sabi in Japanese).
Each dye bath produces slightly different shades, and your garment will develop a magnificent patina
over time.
To ensure colorfastness, our dyers use a conventional fixing process that is GOTS-certified.
